Thanks to its excellent location right by the Cantábrico Motorway, Hotel Cabo Vidio is the perfect starting point for excursions throughout Asturias and the nearby regions, before or after you have enjoyed our excellent Asturian gastronomy.  You will find not only pure nature landscapes, romantic beaches, seaside villages, pre-Romanesque architecture and prehistoric caves but also a wide range of cultural activities in the three nearby cities of Oviedo, Gijon and Aviles.

Beaches and Coast

This area of the Asturian coast with its nearly unspoiled cliffs and bays is definitely worth the visit. From Faro Vidio (the lighthouse) only 3 km from our hotel you can enjoy the views of the west coast up to Cape Peñas, the rock where the hermitage of la Regalina of Cadavedo is located, Cape Busto and up to Cape San Agustin in Navia.

At only a five-minute drive you can find the sandy beach of San Pedro de la Ribera and at a ten-minute drive the beaches of El Silencio (stunning gravel bay), El Aguilar and Concha de Artedo.  There are other beaches of outstanding unspoiled beauty like the beach of Otur, Barayo and Frejulfe. Within less than an hour’s drive you can find the beaches of Tapia de Casariego, Las Catedrales in Lugo, San Lorenzo in Gijón and Rodiles in Villaviciosa.

Seaside towns

Asturias is a sea-focused region and all along its coast there are stunning seaside towns.

Cudillero: It is just within 10 minutes from the hotel. The arrangement of houses forming a natural amphitheater, its sheltered harbor with the best hake and sea bass of the Cantabric Sea and its lighthouse perched on a natural promontory, make of Cudillero a mandatory visit.

Luarca: this village, known as the “Villa Blanca” because of the colour of its houses is just 20 minutes away. Its cemetery overlooking the sea and the lighthouse are really picturesque. It is a charming fishing village and kids will be thrilled to visit the giant squid at the Aula del Mar.

Other interesting fishing villages are Puerto de Vega, the villages of Caridad and Tapia de Casariego in the west and in the east, Llanes, Lastres with its Jurassic Museum, Villaviciosa, Ribadesella and Colombres, all easily accessible now thanks to the Cantabrico Motorway.

Nature

One third of the territory of Asturias is protected area. Besides the National Park of Picos de Europa, within an hour’s drive, there are five Natural Parks as well as uncountable natural reservations and protected landscapes as for instance the Natural Parks of Somiedo and Redes, the Ría del Eo, the Biosphere Reserve of Muniellos or the mining areas. Also the entire west coast from Cudillero to Valdes, including Cape Vidio and Cape Busto is protected landscape.

Discovering the Inside

The inner area of Asturias holds the natural paradise of its mountains and the ethnological wealth of its remote villages where ancient festivals and traditions still remain.

From the area of Taramundi in the border with Galicia, going through the Comarca Vaqueira to the Covadonga Sanctuary in the heart of the Picos de Europa there are thousands of spots to discover.

We must not forget the coalfields with their industrial and mining heritage still traceable in the elevator trestles and big factory chimneys. To understand this past we recommend the visit to the Museums of Mining and Siderurgy in Langreo.

The Three Cities

Oviedo, capital of the Principality of Asturias from the times of the Asturian Kings in the VIIth century, holds the flavor of medieval past in its streets, its Gothic cathedral and historic palaces that exist together with the bustle of a modern commercial city. Its pre-Romanesque monuments are a must.

Gijón, hometown of the Illustrated Jovellanos is a city open to the sea that invites to stroll, to discover places and to enjoy its legendary cider places and restaurants. The old quarter of Cimadevilla, the Elogio del Horizonte by Chillida, the beach of San Lorenzo and the new Cultural City of La Laboral are just some of our suggestions.

Aviles, medieval town formerly heart of the steel siderurgy, is now on its way from an industrial past to a cultural future with the recently opened Niemeyer Cultural Center as a symbol of its radical urbanistic transformation.  A city to rediscover.

Romanesque Route

The set of pre-Romanesque churches from the VIIIth and IX centuries are recognized UNESCO World Heritage sites for their unique significance. They are concentrated in the center of Asturias. There are three architectural gems in Oviedo: San Miguel de Lillo, Santa María del Naranco and San Julian de los Prados whose paintings date back to the VIIIth century, together with the goldsmith jewelry work at the Cámara Santa held in the Cathedral.

We also recommend you visit Santa Cristina de Lena which holds a pre-Romanesque interpretation center, San Pedro de Nora a few minutes away from Trubia, Santianes de Pravia just twenty minutes away from our hotel with an attached museum dedicated to pre-Romanesque, San Salvador de Valdedios in Villaviciosa and Santo Adriano de Tuñon in the Valley of Trubia.

Prehistoric Caves

Recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage sites they are a treasure in the Asturian land. Many of them cannot be visited but Tito Bustillo in Ribadesella, El Pindal in Ribadedeva and Candamo (only thirty minutes from the hotel) are open to visitors and have interpretation centers. A journey to the center of the earth with more than 20.000 year-old paintings.
